Stendhal Gallery is proud to announce PAULA SCHER: THE MAPS, an exhibition of paintings by artist and renowned graphic designer Paula Scher. This show consists of a series of twelve large-scale canvasesóintricate, colorful and obsessively detailed maps of different regions of the world. The paintings are the result of over a decade of work. Due to overwhelming public and critical response, the show has been extended through January 21, 2006.
Ms. Scher began her career creating album covers for CBS Recordings in the 1970ís. She moved on to art direction for magazines at Time Inc., and in the 1980s formed her own boutique firm, Koppel & Scher. She has been a principal at the New York-based Pentagram design consultancy since 1991, where she has created visual identities for Citibank, The New York Public Theater, and the American Museum of Natural History, among others. In 1999, she donated logo insignia to Friends of the High Line, helping to publicize the campaign to restore the Chelsea waterfront from a rusting railroad to an oceanside park. At the moment, Scher is deeply involved with the design of a new urban center in the Mt. Vernon Square neighborhood of Washington, D.C. The final project will include a convention center, a museum, hotels and a retail shopping center.
Paula Scher holds a BFA from the Tyler School of Art and a Doctor of Fine Arts Honoris Causa from the Corcoran College of Art and Design. She has won hundreds of awards for her work, which is included in the permanent collections of numerous institutions, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Library of Congress, the Museum fr Gestaltung Zrich, and the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris. Scher’s current traveling exhibition of works on paper, “The Daily News” has been shown at the Salt Lake Art Center as well as the Nicolaysen Art Museum. She has lectured and exhibited all over the world, and has taught at the School of Visual Arts, as well as at the Cooper Union, Yale University, and the Tyler School of Art. Her art and writings have appeared in numerous magazines and books, and a career monograph, Make It Bigger, was published by Princeton Architectural Press in 2002. THE MAPS exhibition at Stendhal Gallery is accompanied by a catalogue designed by Paula Scher.
Prints: Stendhal Gallery will be Publishing Original Limited Edition Silkscreen Prints from the Series “THE MAPS”.
The Artist, Paula Scher will work with a master fine art printer to realize the editions, the artist will create new Plates and will be involved in all aspects of the printing process. Each print will be an edition of 100 and will be printed on hight quality Arches 88 paper.
