The position’s main duty is the running of this leading, internationally renowned institution. This includes on-going work on how the institution is positioned and perceived in a national and international context. It refers just as much to the maintenance and expansion of the collections and continuous efforts to devise an up-to-date concept for their presentation in an educational manner, as it does to the organization of temporary exhibitions and their accompanying programs in the field of Applied Art. In this context there should be a special focus on design and everyday aesthetics. The administrative side of the position involves the responsible business management of the Museum, personnel management, and the institution’s external representation.

The ideal candidate will be highly qualified in the field and have a relevant university degree or comparable qualification. Wide-ranging experience in the running of a museum is just as desirable as an international network and the ability to work with other disciplines in the cultural field. In particular we expect proven personnel management skills, business acumen, management capabilities, basic legal knowledge, the ability to cooperate with partners in the fields of culture, business, and politics, and inter-cultural expertise. Experience in the procurement of third-party funding, as well as public relations is essential.

The position will be held for an initial period of five years and offers appropriate remuneration.

The City of Frankfurt is endeavoring to increase the proportion of women in this division. For this reason, applications from women are particularly welcome. As a basic principle, there is an option of part-time employment. In the case of equal qualification, the physically challenged will be favored. Applications from candidates from all nationalities are expressly desired.

The Museum für Angewandte Kunst Frankfurt, located in the famous Richard Meier-Building, has one of the world’s leading art collections. A tour of the applied art of different epochs and world religions encompasses furniture and carpets, graphic art, jewellery and objects of table culture. The exhibits reflect the aesthetic values and ideals of beauty of their respective time. At the same time, the objects testify to the outstanding quality of the artistic vision, craftsmanship and economic power. The exhibits are displayed in a way best suited to highlighting the special artistic features of these so-called everyday objects.

The collections span 5,000 years of applied art and comprise European Applied Art from the 12th until the 21st centuries, Design, Book Art and Graphic Art, Islamic and East Asian Art as well as international Product Design.

A particular highlight is the new installation of the Historic Villa Metzler with its nine period rooms spanning the Baroque to Art Nouveau. Precious gold work of the 16th to the 20th centuries from the István Heller Donation is on view in the Silver Gallery.
